Additional information:

General Motors' subsidiary OnStar has joined with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in its efforts to help find missing children. OnStar's Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite and wireless technologies and the expertise of its call center advisors will now serve as the communications link for its 2.5 million subscribers in their efforts to help bring missing children home safely. An OnStar subscriber who wants to report emergency information related to an AMBER Alert or a lost child can press the red OnStar emergency button in his or her vehicle. Immediately, the subscriber will be connected with an OnStar emergency services advisor who will expedite the call to a 911 dispatcher.

They said that vehicles usually driven at those speeds were stolen and were going to shut down the vehicle and call the cops.

Sounds like an urban legend in the making.

Interesting discussion on the merits of onstar. Does anyone know why onstar is not an available option for the C6 Z06?

I had OnStar for 3 years and it worked great on my Buick Lucerne. E-Mails every month with diagnostics, etc. I was tied in with Verizon and use the hands-free calling system incorporated with OnStar. You talk in a normal voice and all was well. Within an hour of picking up my 07 Vette I had transferred my account and was on my way to continued service--until I made my first call. The automated operators could not understand me. I think because of the road noise but I had many, many unsuccessful attempts to call home. Whether by giving a number to the automated or calling out a name tag, OnStar could not understand. Before I ever got home I had called OnStar on my cell phone and cancelled all subscriptions. When the phone worked I was happy but without it, I think OnStar is overpriced.
Big Question is, Did the car call Them or did They monitor the Car from time to time ?
OnStar hasn't had the ability to actively watch ANY car for many years (blue wire removed).  The car had to have called OnStar ... likely, once it hit a certain, pre-programmed scenario.  This long-term 100+ MPH phone call is a good idea, as it's one step closer to retrieving a stolen car, before it's even know to be stolen.  We all know our cars have a black box ... this is a variation of the same technology.

I never used OnStar to make / receive phone calls - only communicated directly with OnStar.  Yes, I agree, the service is overpriced, but also invaluable.  I'd like to see them offer OnStar on a per-call basis (pay as you go) ... perhaps with a minimal yearly fee.  Otherwise, I use the heck out of it during the first free year, and not at all afterwards.  Mercedes-Benz Tele-Aid offers similar service on their vehicles.  You can opt for yearly membership, or a one time LIFETIME membership (for the car, not the owner) at $500.  We selected the lifetime membership on my wife's car ... which we pan to hold onto for eon's.

Bull.

The ability to do a remote-controlled shut-down on the vehicle was not incorporated into OnStar until about a year ago and even though they now can do that on a newer vehicle, it can not be performed on older vehicles.
