Sounds like an issue with the body module not communicating with the PCM. The dealer didn't have anything to offer as far as an explanation?
Possibly a weak signal from the fob?
Gotta be someone out there that's heard of/been thru this somewhere.

When I saw my car at the dealer it looked like a grenade went off in it every wiring harnes in the interior was hanging out not a pretty sight when only 1900klm on the car. They brought in field engineer and factory engineer replaced computors and modules still the same problem so their answer was drive it till it fails and they will try again . Want to make a major road but don't trust car if it will start every time looking for answers
Been through this. The problem is that the car is not receiving the signal from the fob. The fob has to be in your left pocket or else the module in the door won't pick up the signal.
The whole key fob setup is not very good. It comes down to range. I believe there is a module in the driver's door and one in the glovebox. Your key fob has to be in line with one or the other in order to work or else the car will not see it.
If the key fob is in your right pocket the door won't pick up the signal and you are locked out.
If the key fob is in your right pocket once inside the car the module in the door and the module in the glove box won't see it either (the console blocks the signal).
It sucks but it is what it is.

Have 2005 also, never had this problem. Almost always have FOB in RIGHT pocket, often down low at the right seat edge. More likely a weak battery (or poor battery contacts) or defective transmitter.

I purchased a 2005 (no 26) with 31500 miles and had a similar problem. The dealer that I brought it to determined that they had to change the body control module (BCM). Since that time we have put about 20000 miles and have not had a problem. Good luck.
In my case the key fob will NOT work in the right pocket, must be in the left.
Week battery is a non issue since this has been a problem since day one.
Fob location is everything. The range is not good and anything obstructing the line of communication - your body, console, etc. will keep the car from recognizing or picking up the key fob.
To test that theory, just hold the fob in your hand and you will see it will communicate every time.

So, what if you are in the car, have the fob "within range" and so you start the car and hit the road. What happens if for some reason, the fob goes out of range while you're cruising down the road? Does the engine shut off?
No the car did not shut off but as I use the number 2 fob and my wife has the number one fob what happens when the computor loses my fobs input all the cars settings ie: radio, seat and instruments go back to her setings and they will not go back to mine until I shut car off and get out and back in and restart the car. I also agree about the weak battery not being an issue as they replaced my fobs with new ones and also the modules that read the fobs id. But I have kept the fob in my left pocket and have not had a problem so far (touch wood) will keep posting if problem reoccurs

Glad to know that the "FOB" problem is not a new one. My #2 is my problem child as #1 works every where. #2has caused me problems 4 times so far (have only 1500miles). It doesn't matter which pocket, how high or low in the air, or what I bang it on - it just starts working when I give up!! Was going to the dealer Mon morning and see if they can replace the thing! OH, it does work in the receiver in the "glove box - or did the last time I tried. Very much a cause of stress and lack of confidence in the otherwise fantastic car!
