After 5000 miles a clunking noise in the rear end has developed when the cluth is released, or engaged, from 1st or from 2nd. It sounded like a little play had developed in the drive line. The local dealer said it sounded like drive line backlash when they road tested it but couldn't find anything wrong when they put it on the lift. They changed the transaxle fluid but returned the car without acknowledging a solution to a problem they now say does not exist.
Has anyone experienced a problem similar to this one?

I have had the same problem but not with a corvette. It was a dodge truck, the rear end had to be removed and the lash between the ring gear and the pinion had to be adjusted. Big job,no wonder the dealer doesn't want to do it. I would e-mail Art Spong at GM, his address is art.spong@gm.com good luck.

Bill,
Concerning the potential for drive line backlash, Art Spong, Corvettes Brand Quality manager, has quickly responded. "...Bottom line here is, if you are not experiencing a whine, your ring and pinion are probably fine... The differential and trans are really pretty hardy and should not be a cause for concern. My suggestion is to enjoy the car and if you start to hear a gear whine or grinding or clashing noises, get it to a dealership and have another look." He says some clunk noise is possible with all the various drive line components multipling the tolerances that exist between them.
Looks like I'm being told this is natural!

Update: 2005 six speed purchased new. A slack drive line feel started this post 9/05. Dealer could not find problem resulting in a no-fix. Recently a solid, but light, clunk began at 16,000 miles like a light hammer sound hitting the differential every time I added power or took my foot off the gas. Dealer replaced torgue tube under warrenty (Thankfully! 4 months out of original warrenty). Slack driveline problem I originally posted here was finally corrected after two years but the light clunk is still evident. Dealer says a May 08 bulletin calls for a change to differential fluid to correct this. Work done - still clunks. They said to give it 500 miles to work. Another C6 was in there at the same time for the same clunk. Anyone experiencing this?
