Vette(s): 2005 Machine Silver Metallic Convertible

2005 - Corvette with 29000 miles. I was at a traffic signal and was starting to accelerate. The right rear pass side rear axle broke in half at the spindle. Anyone else have this happen ? I have no idea why this happened. I kept the axle and spindle. Others in my Corvette Club have seen it and everyone says it appears to be a defect in the casting. Since GM closed the two dealers by my house, and the police said I had to get it off the road, I had the car towed to a non GM repair shop. I called GM to see if anything could be done to help me and was told no since I didnt take it to a GM dealer. I would appreciate knowing if anyone else has had this problem.  The car is out of warranty.  Anyone have any suggestons or am I SOL.

I'm not sure why you would have towed it to a non-GM facility, then called GM for intervention or assistance.  You might want to call a Chevy or Cadillac dealer with experience in Corvettes (or XLR's) ... then tow it to them for repair.  If that does not work, or is not possible, call a local independent Corvette specialist.

If you have been diligent with regular service at a specific Chevy dealership, SOMETIMES, that dealership will be able to make a good faith repair - especially if there is a known issue.

I would have had it towed to A GM Dealer , but the two in my area were closed by GM. The police were there and was told that I must get the car out of the road so I had it towed to the nearset place that I could think of at the time I was very upset  and was not really thinking. The car would not move I was thinking it was the transmisson I had no idea it was the rear axle. The next dealer is about 50 miles from were I broke down. The two that are closed by GM were two miles and the 2an one was about 10 miles.

I remember reading about this about a year or so ago. If I remember correctly the main problem stemed from heat build-up under extended perfromance driving conditions. What I was looking at was from one of the performance driving events and there was a owner who had C6 and this happened to him. There was posts on the site from engineers at GM and this is why they had put rear diff cooler on Z06 and I suppose ZR1. This has been some time back, before I bought my first Vette....maybe '07. (late)....good luck with you ailment....

If nothing else, problems like this point out the advantage of membership in the GM Motor Club. (http://www.gmmotorclub.com/)  They provide inexpensive protection and other advantages, with blanket coverage for all your vehicles.  When the alternator failed in my collector Olds convertible, they provided towing to the GM dealership of my choice at no cost.  They even offered to tow the car back to my home instead, although that was more than twice as far away.
