Last summer, I jumped into my Corvette, drove out on to the street. About 200 feet from the house, I decided to stop and return to retrieve a forgotten item. I came to a full stop, grasped the Automatic Transmission selector; it would not move from the Drive position. Coincidentally, the car would not respond to a press of the ignition switch, remaining running. I gave it a "Field Calibration" (smacking the lever hard!) but it would not disengage.
This occurred at about 06:00 A.M., prior to the Dealer's opening time. I considered engaging the emergency brake and placing a note on the windshield: "DO NOT STEAL THIS CAR!"
I reconsidered and drove to the Chevrolet Dealer service garage. The Service Garage still locked tight, a man was walking about inside. I honked the horn; he responded by pointing at his watch. I approached the garage window and pounded for attention. Thankfully, he came to within hearing distance. I explained that the car would not turn off nor shift out of drive. He opened the service door, allowing me to drive in.
Engaging the Emergency Brake, we then raised the hood and disconnected the battery. The engine stopped.
Service Techs found the problem to be a linkage plate within the Shifter. Linkage Plate replaced and operating correctly ever since. They did find a service bulletin for this very thing. WOW!
